Pull Box Size Calculator

Minimum interior length & width

For 4 AWG and larger conductors; up to 600 V. Enter trade-size labels separated by commas. For angle/U pulls, separate each row on each wall with a semicolon. Leave unused fields blank. Length runs left–right; width runs top–bottom.

Supported labels: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2, 4, 5, 6.

Minimum interior length: 24 in

Minimum interior width: 13 in

Calculated spans only. Check depth, entry spacing and the actual enclosure layout separately.

Rules and how to enter the layout

Use inch trade-size labels, such as 1-1/4 or 2-1/2. For a straight pull, use the largest raceway in that direction; smaller raceways do not add to the 8× calculation. For angle/U pulls, count the largest entry once at 6× and add every other raceway in the same row, including another entry of the same largest size.

Left/right wall entries constrain length; top/bottom wall entries constrain width. Evaluate each row separately, then take the maximum for that direction. If straight and angle pulls share an axis, satisfy both. A blank axis is “not determined,” never zero inches.

Separately check spacing between entries enclosing the same conductor; the cited angle/U-pull text specifies 6× the larger raceway trade size. The span calculator does not locate openings or verify that spacing. Depth and cover-facing entries also need a separate layout review.

Worked examples

Example 1 — straight pull

Assume 3-inch and 2-inch straight-through raceways along the length. Minimum length = 8 × 3 = 24 in. There is no width input, so the width is not determined by this example.

Example 2 — angle pull, two independent dimensions

Assume one left-wall row of 3, 2 and 1 inches, and one top-wall row of 2 and 1 inches. Length = 6 × 3 + 2 + 1 = 21 in. Width = 6 × 2 + 1 = 13 in. These spans still require an entry-spacing and depth check.

Example 3 — mixed straight and U pulls

Assume a 3-inch straight pull along the length and a length-constraining angle row of 3, 2 and 1 inches. Length = max(8 × 3, 6 × 3 + 2 + 1) = 24 in. For width, a U-pull row of 2, 2 and 1 inches gives 6 × 2 + 2 + 1 = 15 in. A separate row with a 3-inch entry gives 6 × 3 = 18 in, so width = max(15, 18) = 18 in.

Pull-box spans and box-fill volume solve different questions. A dimensional result does not establish the number of conductors permitted in a raceway.

Frequently asked questions

Do I use conduit trade size or actual inside diameter?
Use the nominal inch trade size. A 2-inch trade-size raceway contributes 2 to this inch-based calculation, regardless of its measured bore. Do not substitute the metric designator 53 into an inch formula.
How do multiple rows and opposite walls affect the result?
Calculate each row on each wall separately. For each box dimension, retain the largest applicable result, including any straight-pull requirement. Do not sum separate rows or combine opposite walls into a single row.
Is the calculated length and width a complete box selection?
No. These are minimum interior spans for the entered pulls. Entry-to-entry spacing, depth, conductor bending space, fittings, listing conditions and the actual layout need separate checks. This tool does not apply removable-cover exceptions or select a stock enclosure.
Does this calculator cover more than 600 V or small-wire box fill?
No. This tool rejects voltages above 600 V and addresses the raceway-based pull-box method for conductors 4 AWG and larger. Use a separate box-fill calculation for small-conductor volume allowances. The 600 V ceiling is this tool’s scope, not a claim about the full voltage scope of every NEC edition.

Methodology & sources

Rule reference: NEC 314.28(A). The NFPA public development report, inputs 865 and 1328, reproduces the straight-pull and angle/U-pull text. It is development material, not a newly verified final adopted edition. The worked examples are arithmetic demonstrations, not field measurements or enclosure approvals.

Use the edition adopted by the local authority and the enclosure’s actual interior dimensions. This tool deliberately stops at 600 V and does not evaluate depth or exceptions.
