Flex Conduit Fill Chart (FMC, LFNC, ENT)
Maximum conductors for flexible raceway types per NEC 2023.
Flexible raceway types use the same NEC Chapter 9 fill percentages as rigid conduit (53/31/40), but their interior areas differ from the rigid equivalents. Switch types below to compare FMC, LFNC-B, and ENT. For mixed-conductor jobs use the conduit fill calculator.

FMC — Flexible Metal Conduit × THHN (90°C dry) · NEC 2023 Ch.9 Tables 4 & 5 · 40% (3+), 31% (2), 53% (1)
NOTES & CONTEXT
FMC — Flexible Metal Conduit (Article 348)
Greenfield. Used for short whip drops to motors, transformers, and luminaires where rigid conduit can't flex. Note: FMC over 6 ft long can't be used as the equipment ground — pull a separate EGC.
LFNC — Liquidtight Flexible Nonmetallic (Article 356)
LFNC-B (the smooth-bore variety) is rated for direct sunlight, oil, and wet locations — the go-to for outdoor HVAC condensers and submersible pump whips. LFNC sizes only go up to 2" trade size; for larger flex needs use LFMC (Article 350).
ENT — Electrical Nonmetallic Tubing (Article 362)
Smurf tube. Lightweight blue plastic for inside walls of buildings up to 3 stories. ENT's interior area matches PVC Schedule 40 — easy to remember. Restricted to dry locations and concealed work in most occupancies.
Common flex conduit fill scenarios
- HVAC condenser whip, 4 × 10 AWG THHN: 3/4" LFNC fits with room to spare.
- Motor connection, 3 × 4 AWG THHN + ground: 1" FMC.
- Residential rough-in, 6 circuits of 12-2 NM through ENT: NM cable counts differently — use bundling rules (NEC 334.80), not conduit fill.
